Roger Kube
Roger Kube has a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Colorado – Boulder. A longtime Surfrider Foundation volunteer, he served on the San Diego County Chapter’s Executive Committee from 2012-2014 and 2019-present, acting as Chair in 2013-2014 and in 2020. He has been actively involved in the fight against plastic pollution since 2009, helping to raise awareness and drive policy through advocacy efforts.
Roger was instrumental in helping to pass the California state “bag ban” through his outreach and advocacy efforts in San Diego County. He led, or was part of, Surfrider policy teams that helped pass plastic bag bans in Solana Beach, Encinitas, San Diego, Del Mar, and Oceanside, and expanded polystyrene (EPS) bans in Solana Beach, Encinitas, Imperial Beach, Del Mar and San Diego. He continues to advocate at the local and state-wide level on plastic pollution policy measures.
Roger helped create Surfrider Foundation’s Ocean Friendly Restaurants (OFR) program in San Diego County, now a national program for Surfrider Foundation. The OFR program helps to stop plastic pollution at the source; one restaurant, one customer at a time; it increases awareness, drives behavior change, and ultimately creates a scalable impact to reduce our plastic footprint.
Roger is a former member of the 5 Gyres Institute’s Board of Directors and is currently part of their Advisory Committee. In 2016, Roger was awarded a San Diego Earthworks E.A.R.T.H. Award, recognizing him as one of San Diego County’s environmental leaders. And in 2017, he was awarded a Wavemaker Award by the Surfrider Foundation Board of Directors.
